Recommendations for a successful interview

Before the interview takes place:

  • Read over the entire job description and take notes about any relevant experience you have related to the role you’re are interviewing for.
  • Be prepared to provide examples of experience you have for each requirement on the job description.
Write down questions you have about the role and/or company you will interview with so you have them during the interview.
  • Visit the company website and get a basic understanding of the company you are interviewing with.
  • If you know who you’ll be speaking with when you interview, look that individual up on LinkedIn. The Linkedin mobile app provide great insights about any mutual contacts, shared groups or other related experience between the interviewer and yourself.
  • Look up the address where the interview will take place and make sure you know how to get there and how much time it will take at the time of the interview.

The day of the interview:

  • Arrive at least 5 minutes early to the interview allowing time to find parking, negotiate any security checkpoints and finding the specific office once you’ve arrived at the building.
  • Dress professionally and if you’re unsure of the proper attire you’ll rarely go wrong wearing a suit. It’s better to overdress than underdress for an interview.
  • Bring at least 3 copies of your resume, any examples of your work you can provide, a notepad of paper to take notes (and something to write with) and a copy of the job description for the role that you’re interviewing for.

During the interview:

  • Relax and remember that you have been invited to interview. The company obviously sees something in you that interests them so be yourself and enjoy the conversation.
  • If you don’t know the answer to a question don’t panic. You’re not expected to know everything and it’s much better to respond to questions you don’t know the answer to with one of the following:
    • I’m not sure I understand what you mean when you say, could you clarify what you're looking for.
    • I don't have the specific experience you're asking about but I do have experience doing this and I can talk about that experience if you'd like.

Good luck,
